Come Zumba at Thurston High School for a Great Cause
By Maggie Young and Raiya Crowell
Thurston students who get the chance to take aerobics with Colleen Donokowski know that she is all about getting fit and having fun while doing it.
One of the students’ all time favorite days in aerobics class is when they get to do some Zumba.
“Students ask me everyday, ‘Are we doing Zumba today?” said Donokowski.
“Zumba Fitness is a Latin-inspired cardio-dance workout that uses music and choreographed steps to form a fitness party atmosphere. While many of the types of dance and music featured in the program are Latin American inspired, classes can also contain everything from jazz to African beats to country to hip-hop and pop.” (SPARKPEOPLE.com)
In an interview with health and physical education teacher Mrs. Donokowski, she was able to explain why her students love Zumba days.
“I’ve been teaching Zumba since 2012 and love it. It never gets old because there is always new music, new trainings to attend, and new Zumba wear. When you mix in the fun Zumba clothes, awesome music, and lots of energy, it definitely is a party. My students love Zumba days. They come up front and help lead their favorite songs and even lead the whole class by themselves when I had a substitute. Now that’s Zumba Love!!!!” said Donokowski.
“We start the period off with some warm-ups. The warm-ups typically include stretches and slow pace music to set the tone. Shortly we will pick up the tempo. The moves are shown step by step and can easily be modified if needed. Choreography is not needed. As long as you keep moving and have fun, you’ll be sure to burn some calories. We conclude our period with a slow beat and stretch our muscles, especially the most worked ones, like hamstrings and glutes. My first time, I was nervous to dance and work-out in front of my classmates but after seeing how much fun and judgement free the environment is, I now love zumba and even do it at home!,” said Junior Maggie Young.
One Thurston senior who just happens to be an exchange student from Germany is all about the Zumba craze.
Senior Anna Spoddeck said, “It’s fun and an amazing way to exercise. Dance and working out together is super fun. Mrs. Donokowski is an AMAZING teacher. It’s a great experience.”
Senior Brionna Bryant loves Zumba so much that she does it outside of school as well.
“It’s super fun, I can dance and there’s a judgment free zone. I go to Zumba four times a week,” said Bryant.
On Friday March 18, Mrs. Colleen Donokowski is hosting an open to the public zumbathon fundraiser for one of Thurston’s students.
Shelby is a Junior at Thurston High School, who has been out of school since the beginning of the year. She has ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children and treatments result in a good chance for a cure. Come join us from 6-7:30 pm for an event filled with music, raffles and a good time to help Shelby and her family with medical costs. Walk-ins are welcome. Cost is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Donations for more are deeply appreciated.
